Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
