Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to return in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I’ve had so many incredible moments there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has meant so much to my career."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will represent the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a New Record

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open main draw, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
