The Actress Fiona Shaw Talks About Her Career: From Star Wars to Wizarding World

In a recent interview, esteemed performer Fiona Shaw opened up about her varied professional experiences spanning many years and memorable characters.

The Impactful Andor Monologue

When discussing her unforgettable funeral speech in the Disney+ show Andor, Shaw revealed that the original script contained more explicit wording. "I did say a distinct term in my speech," she explained, "while the screenwriter wanted the studio would approve it."

The performer detailed the unusual shooting circumstances for this specific moment. "When I performed that speech, I was recorded with about 200 cameras to create a hologram. I was entirely by myself in a huge soundstage, with no director or production team present in the room."

Jane Austen Adaptations

Regarding the upcoming screen version of Jane Austen's classic novel, Shaw shared enthusiasm about finishing production. "We've just finished shooting it," she stated, "though performers rarely witness is the final film."

She praised filmmaker Georgia Oakley as "truly wonderful and very assured." The production took place in beautiful estates throughout Britain, including sites within Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

The actress also recalled on her earlier performance in the 1995 adaptation of Austen's Persuasion, playing Mrs. Croft. "The director had specific requirements: without hairpieces and only candlelight," she recalled. "He truly aimed to capture the experience of nineteenth-century existence."

Harry Potter Memories

In response to questions regarding her experience with the Harry Potter franchise, Shaw spoke fondly about working with the late Richard Griffiths. "Richard was the most elegant, artistic and gifted man," she revealed. "He possessed the most beautiful penmanship and on one occasion mailed me a note inviting me to lunch in elaborate gothic lettering."

She described Griffiths as constantly speaking and telling interesting stories with both her and the young actors on set. "He possessed fantastic general knowledge so we would listen captivated to his stories."

Stage Performances

Discussing her New York stage role in the tragedy Medea, Shaw remembered how emotionally demanding the show was. "I encountered one of the ensemble actors several years after, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she shared.

This theatrical work continued for years, beginning in Ireland, then moving to London, followed by Washington DC, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and ultimately Manhattan. "We became quite bonded as a cast," she noted.

Approach to Acting

When questioned about her capacity to move between comedy and drama, Shaw explained that "comedy connects us as it's about breaking conventions." However, she confessed that "prior to a comedy, I always rest badly, because you have to catch the wave on the day."

Concerning her technique for tackling different characters, Shaw commented: "I find them all challenging. But even if the person you're playing is quite distant from you, there is often something about them that you identify with."

Recent Work

Speaking about her recent performance in the production Hot Milk, Shaw described her character Rose as "a difficult person but you can't play anything from that perspective." She explained that Rose experiences a functional neurological disorder that causes mobility issues.

"She is unaware of the effect she creates on her daughter," Shaw observed. "All she knows is that she desires to get better. She's both benign and blind. Maybe this represents what many people resemble."

Personal Reflections

Upon hearing that viewers consider her perfect for gang boss roles, Shaw responded with humor: "Oh dear! I'm really not intimidating. But maybe when infused with intention, my features can appear formidable."

The actress continued: "In reality sometimes quite scatty so perhaps it's therapeutic for me to play very intelligent, organized characters. I try to depict fascinating individuals so I avoid criticizing them. Don't be scared – come and say hello!"

Love for Language

Discussing her celebrated interpretation of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Shaw conveyed her profound relationship with language and poetry. "My heart is always in the language," she stated, "since the indicators to everything are there in the selection of vocabulary."

She believes that "verse constitutes the refined version of language, or the instant that's been preserved." When people boil down to what they genuinely wish to express, it's often poetic."

Voice Recording

Concerning her praised spoken-word performances, particularly the classic Alice in Wonderland, Shaw shared that "I loved reading Alice in Wonderland because I incorporated everybody I knew into it – personal companions and fellow performers."

She described how she performed the caterpillar as channeling Alan Rickman, and characterized the Red Queen evoking Geraldine McEwan. "It always seems a honor to record and perform literature," she finished, "though it requires days and days of work."

Working with Terrence Malick

Remembering her time working with renowned director Terrence Malick on his film Tree of Life, Shaw portrayed him as unconventional. "All that the director expresses and undertakes is unique," she noted.

She shared a specific recollection of their initial encounter: "He left a message on my answering machine which said, 'I wonder, would you assist me with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most exotic choice in the world."

The actress also described Malick's unusual approach of asking actors "Would you prefer to do this scene indoors or outdoors?" – questions rarely posed by other filmmakers. "He only employed natural light," she added, "meaning actors could perform inside by a window or exterior on location."

Regarding the lengthy post-production, Shaw revealed that "He takes approximately three years to edit the film. I had been told by the producer following twenty-four months that I was probably one of the main characters, but by the time the film came out, I was mostly removed."

She concluded by describing Malick's distinctive approach: "He builds this enormous structure, and he takes away many components. He fundamentally dismantles films."
