While the United States continues making unprecedented changes to its vaccination guidelines, a particular individual has surfaced somewhat surprisingly: Dr. Tracy Beth Høeg, an American of Danish descent sports medicine doctor and public health researcher who initially gained attention by casting doubt on COVID-19 vaccinations throughout the global health crisis and has zeroed in on potential fatalities after Covid vaccination in her brief tenure at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Planned Changes to Childhood Vaccine Program

Public health authorities planned to reveal radical changes to the childhood vaccine schedule in December, synchronizing the US with Denmark’s vaccine program, sources say – a significant shift that would place the US at odds with a large portion of the world with no evidence for benefit. The announcement has been delayed until the next year.

In place of the top vaccines chief, Dr. Høeg is listed to present at the event. She was recently named acting director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), the fifth appointee to run the office this year.

Consolidating Power at the Agency

The acting appointment may indicate a tighter collaboration between the drug and biologics divisions as Dr. Høeg and Prasad solidify control at the regulatory agency – and it points to a greater focus upon reevaluating long-standing immunizations at the FDA.

Høeg has repeatedly called for discontinuing specific pediatric shot schedules in the US to become more like Denmark's approach, a country with universal health coverage and a population about the size of the state of Wisconsin.

To date comments, she has kept her attention on vaccination policy – traditionally the purview of Dr. Prasad, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) – as opposed to drug regulation.

Questions Over Expertise

Dr. Høeg has no apparent track record in drug development, regulation or administrative roles, which has been customary for previous directors of the biologics center. She has served at the FDA as a top consultant to the FDA chief and CBER since March.

“She doesn’t seem to have the requisite experience” for running the drug-regulation department, stated a neurologist and psychiatrist. “She lacks experience running a clinical trial. She lacks experience in leading a large organization. She has no expertise in pharmaceutical oversight.”

Previous heads of CBER would “be deeply familiar with legal statutes and the science of medication creation”, said Janet Woodcock. “Frankly, she lacks the type of experience that prior appointees who led CBER have had.”

This division has an immense range of responsibilities at the FDA, she pointed out.

“Everybody just zeroes in on the new drug program, but the generic drug division clears a multitude of generic medications. There’s a biologic copycat branch, OTC medication office and more, and all of those have to be supervised,” she said. “The thing you neglect, that’s the thing that I always told people is going to bite you.”

There is also, a substantial leadership aspect to the position, which manages over 5,000 employees. “It is a enormous administrative position, if you do it right,” the former official said.

Agency Reaction and Controversial Initiatives

When asked about concerns about Dr. Høeg's qualifications and whether this selection signifies more teamwork among FDA leaders on immunizations, a representative stated that the “questions rely on incorrect premises”.

“This background aligns with the duties of her position,” the official stated, pointing to the period Høeg spent advising the agency head on “pharmaceutical safety and oversight research, including computerized risk analysis and vaccine surveillance”.

As acting director, Høeg takes over the agency head's controversial priority voucher program, a disputed rapid therapy clearance system that reportedly worried her former heads. “How are these therapies being picked for this voucher program? Who is making the decisions?” Howard asked. “There’s a lot of secrecy occurring at the regulatory body right now.”

Overall, he remarked, “the agency appears to be shifting towards less stringent rules of pharmaceuticals, except for immunizations.”

Public Past Work on Immunizations

Concerning vaccines, Dr. Høeg has a more established, if troubling, past, Howard observe. She authored a study using non-validated crowd-sourced reports to estimate the incidence of heart inflammation after Covid vaccination. She advised the Florida top health official Joseph Ladapo, who allegedly have modified findings to imply Covid vaccinations are riskier than they are.

Part of her “wish list” for the current federal leadership featured revising rules for novel immunizations and discontinuing “non-essential” vaccines, she said post-election on a online show. At the FDA, Høeg has reportedly suggested excluding adolescent males from obtaining COVID-19 vaccinations.

“She’s an all-around true believer who starts off with her beliefs and tailors the evidence to accommodate the evidence in a highly misleading, fraudulent manner,” Howard stated.
