Jujutsu Kaisen's Latest Episode Uncovers the Tragic Paradox of the Culling Game Ritual

The Culling Game ritual in Jujutsu Kaisen is framed as one of the most disturbing acts of jujutsu terrorism in history. The third season has been methodically revealing the unsettling layers of this deadly competition, though its true purpose remains shrouded in mystery to the combatants themselves. Yuta Okkotsu entered the game following the events of the third episode, with Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro subsequently attempting to gather allies and formulate plans to endure. Yuji and Megumi were separated immediately upon arriving in the first Tokyo colony, leading up to an thrilling confrontation between Megumi and the reincarnated sorcerer Reggie Star in episode 10.

A Genius Strategist and a Game's Empty Triumph

While episode 11 cements Megumi Fushiguro's reputation as a brilliant tactical mind, it also powerfully highlights the deeply ironic nature of the Culling Game. With the most powerful jujutsu users at the mercy of a contest that doubles as a deathtrap, the series questions what it means to be the "strongest" in a world that looks down upon the weak. It transcends defeating every enemy to demonstrate superiority—it's about revealing how meaningless that type of strength is within a manipulated framework.

The Climax of a Duel

Episode 10 concluded with Megumi unleashing his unfinished domain expansion, Chimera Shadow Garden, inside a confined gym. The second-to-last installment of this story arc resumes with Reggie dismissing this move due to his anti-domain technique, Hollow Wicker Basket. Reggie's unique cursed technique enables him to avoid damage by neutralizing domain expansions infused with a cursed technique, which cancels any guaranteed hits. However, since Hollow Wicker Basket does not defend against cursed techniques themselves, its efficacy depends on the presence of a domain barrier. Megumi's domain, being not fully realized, lacks a barrier altogether, which is precisely why he drew Reggie into the enclosed gymnasium to act as a makeshift enclosure. This clever ploy allows Megumi to assault Reggie with manifestations of his technique, catching the sorcerer off-guard with this unexpected loophole.

The visual presentation has been stunning this season. The Megumi versus Reggie fight is crafted with visible love, incorporating shaky-cam movements and distorted perspectives to create a sense of immediacy and dynamism.

Even the visual of Megumi barely keeping his domain stable while weighed down by the pressure of Reggie's summoned objects is striking to behold. The gymnasium's shadowy interior lights up with Megumi's blue cursed energy, dragging Reggie into the abyss of his Ten Shadows Technique. Although Reggie does his best to withstand Megumi, he is outmaneuvered at every turn. Reggie tries to crush Megumi by materializing a small house, but it breaks through the floor, plunging both combatants into the pool located beneath the gymnasium. At this moment, it becomes abundantly clear that Megumi had not retreated fearfully—he had deliberately lured Reggie into a carefully laid snare, which concludes with Megumi canceling his domain once Reggie's waterlogged tools become unusable.

Victory's Bitter Aftertaste

After a brutal hand-to-hand struggle, Megumi incapacitates Reggie with Divine Dog: Totality to execute the finishing move. In his dying moments, Reggie compares sorcerers to deceivers while praising Megumi's cleverness. It is then that Reggie reveals he was never allied with Kenjaku; he was merely a spectator who got involved in the Culling Game. Megumi brings up Master Tengen to elicit a possible confession about his role, but Reggie's final words linger on the pointlessness of the game itself. These words render Megumi's victory feel empty as he realizes that Tengen may not have been totally forthcoming about the true nature of the Game. Megumi has already been compelled to kill two sorcerers in his own defense, an act that must weigh heavily on him despite his perception that the ends justify the means if he wishes to save Tsumiki.

The Mastermind's Mysterious Plan

Kenjaku's true endgame remains the most compelling element of the story. He seems to be utilizing the Culling Game as a direct method to eliminate the weakest within jujutsu society. The immense stress of the battles may even trigger new cursed techniques among the strongest participants. An illusion of control is at play, as the game's complex rules obscure the fact that it is, in essence, a ruthless mass murder ritual. This "adapt or die" dynamic radically changes the definition of the "strongest," as it does not boil down solely to the raw strength of one's technique.

Yuta Okkotsu in Sendai Colony

We are given a hint of this when a voiceover states that Fumihiko Takaba's Comedian technique is so powerful it could rival Satoru Gojo's Limitless, yet Takaba remains blissfully unaware of his own strength. Another sorcerer often inspiring comparisons to Gojo is Yuta, who concludes the installment by eliminating the historical figure Dhruv Lakdawalla in the Sendai Colony. Lakdawalla's death dissolves the stalemate in that colony, setting the stage for intense battles involving Yuta in the upcoming finale.

The Core Irony

The central paradox of the Culling Game is the false promise of power it markets to its most skilled players. The architect ultimately aims to use Sukuna as a "bomb" to precipitate the collapse of jujutsu society, a process that will inevitably endanger the weak and defenseless. This relationship between the strong and the weak was fleshed out in season 2’s Hidden Inventory Arc, where Gojo and Suguru Geto held completely different worldviews. A young Gojo, in his arrogance, had distanced his status as the "most powerful" from ethical duty, while a young Geto believed that strength only has value if it safeguards the vulnerable. These viewpoints reverse after a tragic event, propelling Geto toward a genocidal rampath fueled by his contempt for non-sorcerers. Meanwhile, Gojo's painful experience leads him to understand that strength is meaningless without a younger generation of sorcerers to carry an empowered legacy rooted in empathy—an empathy that encompasses the safety of non-sorcerers, who must be protected from the noxious influence of curses.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 undermines this vision for a gentler world with Kenjaku's plan to fuse all people with Tengen. This apathetic goal disregards individuality and treats jujutsu sorcerers as mere tools used for achieving capricious ends. Adhering to the rules of the Culling Game offers no assurance of survival, especially since the outcomes are manipulated yet unpredictable. The promise of a winner is a lie, just as a world without survivors is as hollow as a waking dream. With this story arc concluding next week, we will be one step closer to witnessing the travesty that the Culling Game makes of its most talented sorcerers.
